Portal Bonito

Icon system design

Designing a custom icon system to translate unique local fauna and culture into functional UI assets.
An updated visual identity to accompany a company’s SaaS as it joins the web ecosystem.

Portal Bonito, a non-profit web portal for one of Brazil’s most popular eco-tourism destinations, needed to convey tour information quickly. Strict regulations mean every tour has specific requirements, but text-only descriptions were slow to scan, and standard icon libraries were too generic to represent the region’s unique needs.

My goal was to design a custom library of 103 icons that balanced functional clarity with authenticity. The icons needed to be legible at small sizes (24px) to aid in quick scanning of information, while portraying the city’s unique wildlife and culture.

I designed a custom icon system made to represent the region’s culture and wildlife, illustrating specific local concepts like “wood stove lunch” and local fauna like the Maned Wolf and the Toucan.

The result is a cohesive, visually inviting set that bridges the gap between utility and identity, reducing the cognitive load for users comparing tour and activity options while reinforcing Portal Bonito’s brand as a champion of local culture.
